The Trevor Constable Story

In 1969-1972, Trevor Constable was employed by the ACO as their West Coast cloudbuster operator, doing many orops under ACO auspices, with their funding. He was nominally under Blasbands supervision, and was helped by a woman named Mary Poe, who was in therapy with Dr. Albert Duvall.

On one occasion, while Blasband was visiting, Constable did an operation to demonstrate a new cloudbusting technique he had developed. The success of the operation was documented by the news report next day: Storm Hikes State Death Toll To 67 on Rain-slicked Freeways.

On another occcasion, one of his orops was similiarly documented by a news headline: 9-year-old Boy Swept Out To Sea By Sudden, Unexpected Storm. Both of these news headlines were known to Blasband at the time, but there is no record that he ever raised any objection to this murder by cloudbuster with ACO funding and suport.

When I met Constable, in Dec., 1971, he told me Reich was not the real inventor of the cloudbuster, he was a re-incarnated Atlantean who remembered how the Atlanteans had used cloudbusters. He told me the cloudbuster used by the Atlanteans was exactly the same design, and they had fought a war with them which sank Atlantis. When I asked how he knew all this, he Said, "I'm clairvoyant".

Constable told me he was an ocultist, urged me to read Rudolph Steiner, and said Reich was "blocked against mysticism". More to the point, he also said the way to convince people cloudbusting worked was to go for breaking the rainfall record everytime he operated. He said he was going to "bring storms into Los Angeles that would turn the place inside out".

Later, when I obtained documentation in the form of a letter in which he said the exact same thing, I showed the letter to Jerome Eden, who got very excited and sent it to Ellsworth Baker. The ACO had an emergency Board of Directors meeting and Constable was fired, but over the strong objections of Blasband, who argued that Constable did good work. Baker told me a short time after that, "I'm worried about Dr. Blasband".

Constable, according to his book, Loom of the Future, had been a campaign worker for the 1968 presidential campaign of George Walace, who ran on a racial segegation platform. That, along with his mysticism, was known to Blasband at the time.

Constable had formed a bad impression of me when I visted him because a Black friend of mine, Larry Diggs, a well-known San Francisco disk jockey, had gone along with me to see him. Constable was friendly and polite, but afterwards sent a letter to several orgonomists warning them I was "associating with Black magicians".

Mary Poe has told me that Constable had figured out how to direct a lightning strike with a cloudbuster and had demonstrated the technique. A short time later, when she had an argument with Constable and quit as his assistant, there was a tremendous unforecast thunderstorm that night, with numerous lightning strikes right near her home and none anywhere else. She is convinced he was trying to kill her. Since I have tested out the technique and confirmed that it works, I am inclined to believe her.

At the time Constable got fired from by the ACO, Blasband offered to resign from the ACO and go into the commercial cloudbusting business with him, but Constable told him to stay with the ACO so he could keep Constable informed of what the ACO was doing. In other words, Blasband was to become a spy in the ACO for Constable.

Blasband was angry at me for blowing the whistle on his friend, and when I asked him why he had not, as an orgonomist, considered Constables mysticism pathological, he said that Constable does good work and I was a biggot to hold the mans religion against him. It is not surprising that Blasband later became involved with another mystical guru, Levashov, and has come to believe in a mystical theory of the functioning of the cloudbuster instead of the orgonomic theory of Reich.

 That a mystical.minded person like Constable could be accepted by the ACO as fit to do cloudbusting is enough to raise questions about their competence as psychiatrists in itself, but that they had accepted for a highly responsible position, a position in which the lives of unsuspecting members of the public could be put at risk, a man who had worked for the election of a presidential candiate whose main issue was racial segregation, says all I need to know about the ACO. One must be very far to the right indeed to consider racism a respectable political position.

At the time, I was told by Ellsworth Baker that the next issue of the Journal of Orgonomy would contain an article explaining why Trevor Constable was no longer working for them. I am still waiting for that article. The ACO has never formally repudiated Constable, leaving people who do not have access to personal conversations with insiders to assume he is still connected with the ACO.

Blasband And Levashov

All this can easily be verified by a look at the websites of Blasband, where he endorses Levachov, and of Levashov, where you can see exactly how racist and anti-semitic he is. I do not see how a belief that the human "mind", whatever that is, can influence weather without any orgone-biophysical explanation being possible, can replace the theory that weather is an orgone energy phenomena and can be influenced by changes in the orgonotic potential in various parts of the atmosphere, and that those potentials can be altered by providing a conduit from a specific point in the sky to a body of water which will attract energy via that conduit. To the mystic, there is no connection between events. One "thinks" or "wills" something to happen, and it happens, without any intervening medium. This absense of a causual mechanism is the exact reverse of what is searched for in the natural sciences, which is the CONNECTION between the cause and the effect. A mystical explanation for an event, which really means no explanation, is an avoidence of an explanation. While the scientist tries to find what is happening behind the scenes, the mystic tries to avoid seeing what is going on "behind the curtain".    And if orgone energy phenomena are the explanation, avoiding that explanation is avoiding recognition of orgone energy. This avoiding of orgone is the whole meaning and purpose of mysticism. It is a means of reducing the anxiety of contact with the life energy by convincing oneself the "dangerous" life energy does not exist. By endorsing the theory that instead of orgone energy, some vague, undefined "psychic" ability of the operator is the operative factor in the functioning of the cloudbuster, Dr. Blasband is at one with those who say orgone energy does not exist. Reich described mysticism as a distorted view of the world caused by armoring in the optical segment. In this connectiuon, it might be relevant that Blasband wears glasses. Weather Control

Weather control is like emotional armoring. It is the usual way of the rigidly neurotic person, a person who defends himself strongly against a perceived dangerous world,  to think any problem is caused by things being "out of control" and that controlling them would make the problem go away. Actually, the exact reverse is true.

The neurotic person who habitually controls his breathing, for example, is having physical and emotional problems because of that control and if he could STOP controlling it, the problems would be over. The habitual compulsive controlling of the breath is the reason there are problems.

The normal atmosphere, functioning without human intervention, is the one we grew up in, the environment we developed in for millions of years, and are best adapted to live in. It is therefore the condition in which we are safest.

The most important atmospheric danger at the present time is that the atmosphere no longer is being left alone to regulate itself without human input. It is being affected by modern nuclear and electromagnetic technologies. It is being damaged, disrupted, and destroyed by these modern technologies. And adding yet another layer of even MORE modern technological intervention to the already sick, injured, and dying atmosphere will not help anything. It will just speed up the process of killing what is left of the atmospheric BIOLOGICAL energy.

And that word, biological, is the key factor. The energetic continuum that drives the atmosphere is composed of the same energy that the living organism derives it`s specifically biological characteristics from. The atmosphere behaves like a living organism would under the same conditions because it is energetically the same. 

Like the patient whose relatively mild initial problems are made worse by too much medication, the atmosphere needs to be relieved of the constant burden of human intervention so it can recover and function normally again at it´s own pace, not at a pace determined by humans and what they are doing to it.

The authoritarian personality cannot see any good in anything functioning freely without being controlled by someone. They feel threatened by the freedom of children, animals, and societies. They feel that anything not under control is a danger. And in this case, the atmosphere is the intended victim of their control-freak mentality. These people want to control the weather because it frightens them to not have power over everything around them, both natural and human.

It is no accident that the same people who get interested in controlling the weather are the ones who are on the far right of the political spectrum in other fields as well. For example, they are very likely to be free-energy advocates, thinking that finding some new power source, such a motor that runs on the ether, will solve all environmental problems.

This fallacy is standard in the alternative science movement, which is a right-wing movement that ignores all the other types of environmental problems, especially the really BIG one of over-population, and tries to claim all environmental issues can be solved by discovering a new power source without the cultural pain of changing religious beliefs that encourage over-population, social customs that assume the earth exists for the benefit of humans and that everything can be measured in economic terms, and life-styles that depend on industrialism and modern technology.

It is no accident that the "alternative science" movement, the so-called "free-energy" movement, is filled with individuals who also trumpet their belief in a "god" and advocate "patriotism", two forms of authoritarian sentiments that are very common among those who enjoy the fantasy of being able to "control the weather". Authoritarian mystical religions, authoritarian political ideologies, and the authoritarian desire to control nature are all at root the same thing, and are based on a world-view that fears freedom. 

The job of the environmental movement is to stand in the way of this so-called "progress" and stop this destructive intervention before the atmosphere is totally killed by these authoritarian technology-freaks and their shinny new toys.

Nearly ANY electromagnetic device can have harmful effects on the weather. And given that the control-freaks do not see that these effects ARE harmful, they will celebrate them as a wonderful scientific breakthrough in "weather control" instead of seeing that what they have found is really another way of DAMAGING the weather.

So it is possible that some device or other may indeed have an effect on local weather conditions, though almost certainly, not a good one.

 We may have to get used to "democracy" in the field of "weather control"-a democracy in which everyone who wants to control the weather can do so for a few dollars from their backyard.

Such a "democracy" in the field of weather control would rather quickly result in so much atmospheric chaos that agriculture on any large scale would soon become impossible over most of this planet, as the atmosphere received conflicting inputs from numerous sources with differing and often incompatible agendas. 

In which case, the best thing we can hope for is that civilization collapses and most of these backyard weather-control hobbyists get killed off in the fighting over what is left in the supermarkets before it is too late for the atmospheric life energy to recover from the damage they will do to it.

                                Cloudbusting : Environmental Menace

 Wilhelm Reich, in his book, "The Murder of Christ" spoke of the harm done to the cause of freedom by irresponsible "Freedom Peddlers" and warned about the possibility that his own work would be similarly usurped by "Orgonomy Peddlers" who would use it in harmful ways. As with so much Reich said, this warning has been ignored by many people favorably disposed toward Reich and his work, many of whom are supporting and encouraging individuals whose reckless and irresponsible misuse of Reich's discoveries and incompetent and misguided efforts to "prove Reich right" are causing serious ecological damage.

 

Among the worst of these is a Dr. James DeMeo, of Ashland, Oregon, who has conducted numerous cloudbusting operations over many years and has caused the deaths of thousands of innocent people and done enormous damage to the environment.

 

  Dr. DeMeo and his associates are doing a great deal of harm to the environment and innocent members of the public by incompetent cloudbusting operations conducted without proper ecological knowledge or concern for the environment. Their bungled operations have frequently resulted in devastation to ecosystems and other damages, including the deaths of many innocent bystanders, due to storms, floods, and freezing weather.

 

In 1989, DeMeo, then living in the San Francisco Bay area, conducted a series of cloudbusting operations in the Arizona desert. As recounted in his article in the Journal of Orgonomy, he first visited Arizona in March, two months before the rainy season starts, and within 3 days had produced rain. He subsequently visited Arizona one weekend each month during the 5-month rainy season and brought rain each time for a seasonal total of 5 times the normal rainfall for the area in which he was working.

 

Now, in any area with a well-defined wet season and dry season, all native plant and animal species are adapted to the normal dry season and need it. Small burrowing mammals such as pocket mice, kangaroo rats, gophers, etc.give birth underground in the dry season; if it rains unexpectedly at the wrong time of year, the burrows flood and the infants drown.

 

 Reptiles such as snakes, lizards, the desert tortoise, which is on the endangered species list, and the Gila Monster, found only in Arizona, lay their eggs in the dry season under a thin coat of sand, just enough to hide them but allow the sun to incubate them. If it rains out of season, the sand is washed away and they lose a clutch of eggs.

 

These small mammals and reptiles are the base of the food chain and if their population crashes so will that of the owls, coyotes, badgers, and other predators that depend on them.

 

Seeds dispersed in desert sand will germinate when they become moist. If there is out-of-season rain too long before the rainy season starts, they get a "false start" and then die before the real rainy season comes with sufficiently prolonged rains` to keep them growing until they produce a new generation of seeds.

 

The following year, DeMeo undertook a series of weekend expeditions to Arizona durring the usual rainy season. Since this series of operations was planned far in advance, when it would have been impossible to know what the weather at the time would be like, it was obviously not an attempt to break a drought or restore normal conditions. It was intended to be conducted regardless of what he actual weather at the time` of the planned operation might turn out to be.

 

The published report of that project shows a 500% increase in rainfall over the course of the wet season. Ask any farmer what 5 times normal rainfall would do to his crops! Unlike plants in non-desert areas, most desert plants lack the mechanism that limits uptake of excessive wather. Most desert plants absorb all the water they can get, and will swell up and burst when they get twice normal rainfall. This applies especially to the Sagaro Cactus, the State Flower of Arizona, which is on the Endangered Species List.

 

In "Contact With Space", Reich described exactly what he did in Arizona. He spent 5 months in the desert. He drove 100 miles every day just to familiarize himself with the landscape so he could note any changes in it. By contrast, James DeMeo lived in Northern California and commuted to the desert one weekend a month.

 

After 5 months of patient work, Reich succeeded in obtaining a lush growth of grass WITHOUT A DROP OF RAIN HAVING FALLEN ---- That's right! Reich, according to his own report, did not create rain in the desert and did not want to!

 

In fact, he explicitly says that rain would have made it impossible to obtain the increase in plant growth he did obtain, since it would have drowned the developing vegetation. Reich's goal, in which he was successful only after 5 months of patient daily labor, was not to make rain, but to revive the stagnant energy field of the desert to the point where it could regulate itself and produce rain at its own times, not according to some man-made schedule.

 

DeMeo misses this point entirely. He produces rain on an artificial schedule only to create impressive charts and graphs, ignoring the catastrophic effects of 5 times normal rainfall on all plant and animal species, and then, totally disregarding what Reich plainly said, claims to have "replicated" Reich's work in the desert. He repeatly refers to "Reich's rainmaking expedition" and to Reich "making rain in the desert" when in fact Reich specifically said he did not do so.

 

In subsequent years DeMeo undertook two trips to Namibia to break droughts there with a cloudbuster. He also trained local operators and left equipment with them so that Namibia now has a permanent drought- abatement program in place. Under normal conditions -- normal for the last 5-6000 years, that is -- Southern Africa has a regular cycle of 3 or 4 good years followed by a drought year.

 

 In the dry years, the prevailing winds pick up millions of tons of dust and carry it out over the ocean. About half of it falls into the ocean where it provides silica, phosphates, and other essential nutrients to the phytoplankton which are the base of the marine ecosystem food chain. So in years when Southern Africa has droughts, life in the South Atlantic flourishes and in years Southern Africa has good rains, the South Atlantic marine life dies back.

 

The remainder of the dust is carried over to Brazil, where it is the sole source of trace elements not found in Brazilian soils which are essential nutrients for many tropical rainforest plant species. Like the sea-life, the Brazilian rainforest therefore flourishes in years when Namibia has a drought and declines in years when Namibia has plenty of rain. By establishing a permanent drought abatement facility in Namibia, DeMeo has contributed to irreparable harm to the global environment. (1)

 

 In another case of ecological ignorance and irresponsibility, he reports in one of his publications that to make up a long-standing water deficit during a recent series of dry years in California, he extended the rainy season by a month one year and 6 weeks another year. I have spoken to a biologist at the Point Reyes Bird Observatory who tells me that in both years in question they lost a significant percentage of baby birds due to inclement weather during the normally dry nesting season. Baby birds get pneumonia in wet weather. Incidentally, some of the birds affected were on the Endangered Species List. (2)

 

In several consecutive years in which there was a drought in California, DeMeo and the group he belongs to, known as the C.OR.E. Network, conducted a long series of operations in an effort to end the drought pattern. While some rains did fall, the drought prsisted. It was obvious from reading his reports that the problem was the cloudbuster itself. As a safety measure, DeMeo and his associates use cloudbusters operated by remote control. This is to protect the operator from too much exposure to DOR in the immediate vicinity of the cloudbuster.

 

The remote control equipment uses 12-volt D.C. batteries to power electrical servo-motors to elevate and turn the cloudbuster pipes. Electricity has an excitng effect on orgone, and the 12-volt D.C. current was enough to cause an over-excitation of the field of the cloudbuster, which was then imparted to the orgone energy field of the atmosphere, causing an expansion that counteracted the contraction they were trying to cause to bring rain.

 

 As a result of this attempt to end the drought, it was instead prolonged. The drought would have been over much sooner if there had been no cloudbusting attempted.

 

DeMeo has also done cloudbusting operations in the Middle East. I have seen documentation obtained from the National Climate Data Center, in Ashville, North Carolina,  showing numerous deaths of people in the region as a result of catastrophic weather during the periods in which he was operating there.

 

In addition to a cold snap that was the worst in recorded history and brought the first snow in 40 years to Israel, along with the deaths of 22 people in a snowslide in the mountains in Turkey, his own report contained documentation of people drowned in a flash-flood while camping in a normally dry riverbed, and several deaths in accidents caused by driving too fast under unfamiliar`conditions on rain-slicked roads. When questioned about this by some of his German collegues, DeMeo reportedly defensively replied that his operations in the Middle East had done so much good that a few` deaths were an acceptable price to pay. Dr.DeMeo also conducted a 4-year project in Eritria to increase rainfall in that normally very dry country. The project was, according to his own report, a great success. However the effective range of the cloudbuster is very large, and the weather it creates does not stop at national borders. At the same time the rains were falling on Eritria, they also were falling on surrounding countries, and in neighboring Kenya there were disasterous floods, killing many people, followed by epidemics of water-bourne diseases like cholera and malaria caused by the increase in mosquitos which found favorable breeding conditions in the now water-logged landscape. About 20,000 people died of diseases in Northern Kenya as a result of the successfull cloudbusting operations in nearby Eritria.

 

Dr. DeMeo has also acted as an advisor for some groups in Europe who look to him for guidance and expertise in cloudbusting. One such group was responsible for a severe storm that killed about 200 people in Central Europe. (4) (8)

 

DeMeo is the leader of a group called the C.O.R.E. (for Cosmic Orgone Engineering) network. Two other members of the group, Mr. John Schleining and Dr. Stephen Nagy, have on occasion taken it upon themselves to play Smokey the Bear and stop forest fires in Oregon. According to their own reports published in the Journal of Orgonomy, they have caused up to 2.5 inches of rain in a dry summer month which normally has about 0.25 inch. Ten times normal rainfall for that time of year! This is not drought relief; it is blatant disruption.The time to break a years- long drought is in the normal rainy season, not in what is normally the dry season.

 

Despite what Smokey told these people in grade school, natural wildfires have an important role in forest life-cycles and should not be prevented. They open up stands of trees so some can grow, recycle nutrients back into the soil, help some kinds of seeds germinate, and clear away underbrush that would otherwise accumulate enough in several years to cause an eventual really disastrous fire.By meddling in normal forest fire cycles, Schleining and Nagy are following an outmoded fire-suppression policy which the Forest Service now realizes was a mistake and has abandoned. (6)

 

According to the same report in the "Journal of Orgonomy", the cloudbuster was also used to prevent fire in another way besides increasing rainfall: it was used to decrease the number of lightning strikes in the area. Now, aside from its role in creating useful and necessary fires, lightning fixes atmospheric nitrogen into compounds plants can utilize. For plant species that lack a symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria on their roots, including many temperate-zone forest trees, lightning plays an essential role as a source of fertilizer, so this application of the cloudbuster, far from benefiting the environment, amounts to mere vandalism of Oregon's forests.   (1) My claim that atmospheric dust transport from Africa is essential to South Atlantic and South American ecosystems and that therefore cloudbuster interference with droughts in Africa is irresponsible and damaging is documented by the following:

 

The New York Times' International Edition on October 29, 1992 contains an article about how hot "October winds scoop up the thin topsoil off the African savanna, swirl it high into the skies, and thrust it west on a journey that can stretch thousands of miles." The article
by Marlise Simons goes on to explain how "the severe and lethal droughts of Africa are a boon for life in the Atlantic Ocean and for soil and vegetation in the Americas."

In addition to that New York Times account, There is also an article published in Tellus (1992, 44B, pp 133-149), a scientific journal, on "Saharan Dust in the Amazon Basin." The authors of the article, R. Swap, M. Garstang, and S. Greco of the University of Virginia Department of Environmental Sciences, are the same scientists who are featured in the New York Times account, and they make a compelling case that "Any strategy designed to preserve the Amazonian rain forest or any part thereof should equally concern itself with the inter-relationship between the rainforest, global climate, and the arid zones well removed from Amazonia."

(3) The dates of operations in the Middle East by Dr. DeMeo are in his own report posted on his website. Compare those dates with the following for evidence that those operations killed a number of innocent people:

 

The January 4, 1992 issue of the "Weekly Climate Bulletin," a newsletter published by the Climate Analysis Center of the United States Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration  reports on a "New Year's Day storm [which] brought torrential rain and high wind to parts of the Middle East, forcing schools and businesses to close," flooding streets, blanketing Jerusalem with snow, "blacking-out" power for a fourth of the homes, creating "snow...for the first time in the mountains north of the Red Sea resort of Eilat," covering the mountains of northern Saudi Arabia with snow, downing
power lines and telephone lines in Lebanon, causing heavy avalanches in southeastern Turkey, and "killing 22 people."

 

 The "Global Climate Highlights Feature" page states that "Abnormally cold air has
settled over large sections of northern Africa, the Middle East, south-central Asia, and the Far East during the last two weeks."

 (5) On page 96 of the Pulse of the Planet, #4 issue, there is
a report by DeMeo entitled "OROP ISRAEL 1991-1992," in which [DeMeo] does mention flooding, homes destroyed, and people dying from traffic accidents on flooded roads as a result of the heavy rains occuring after DeMeo's November 1991 cloudbusting operations in the Middle East. 

 Quoting now from DeMeo's own report :
 

"Our research team had not anticipated the strength of the storms
which subsequently developed in the eastern Mediterranian.... When heavy
rains came, traffic often came to a standstill for hours.  Previously
bone-dry river beds and conduits filled quickly, and overflowed onto major
roads.... A few deaths also occured on the highways due to the fatal
combination of rain-slickstreets and highway speeding, or when people
attempted to drive their cars through rain-swollen streams.... Additional
difficulties also occured in a few areas when power lines were knocked down
by heavy winds or accumulated snow, leaving many persons without power,
sometimes for days."

Here, in his own words, DeMeo admits to having participated in a scientific
experiment which appears to have wreaked havoc on the public while
concurrently serving as the direct or indirect cause of several deaths

(7) An article published in "Science News," October 1995 documents an atmospheric chemist by the name of Pud Franzblau has discovered that lightning is a crucial ingredient
involved in the maintainence of life, because it "fixes," or breaks down, the nitrogen atoms
which exist in the air in a form unusable by plants, into a usable form. Up until Franzblau's fieldwork indicated that lightning is responsible for about 1 billion tons of nitrogen fixing (instead of only 10 million tons), researchers had thought that plants were the biggest nitrogen fixers on earth.

 It should be apparent that messing around with the atmosphere with a cloud-buster without an inkling of its ramifications on the generation of lightning could have unforeseen, untoward consequences in the ecological system on nitrogen fixation, plant growth, and human existence.

Bei einer großangelegten Aktion, kam es zu einer internationalen Wetterkatastrophe, in deren Verlauf es etwa 200 Tote und Schäden im Bereich von 100 bis 200 Milliarden Dollar gab. Diese Aktion, an der eine Reihe von Leuten beteiligt waren, die sich heute in der orgonomischen Cloudbusting-Szene lautstark über die positiven Ergebnisse äußern, wurde daraufhin totgeschwiegen. Um keine rechtlichen Probleme zu schaffen, werde ich die genauen Umstände dieser Aktion auch nicht preisgeben. Obwohl diese Aktion (intern) als erfolgreich gewertet wurde, (weil eine monatelange DOR-Situation beendet werden konnte), werden das sowohl die Opfer und deren Angehörigen, wie auch die vielen Menschen, die ihre Existenz verloren haben, anders sehen. Außer den straf- und zivilrechtilichen Folgen, die das für alle Beteiligten haben könnte, wurden auch internationale Abkommen verletzt.

A Suggestion For An Orgonomic Website

There are plenty of websites on orgonomy, including several by orgonomists, but they all seem to only offer the same basic introductory story of 

What is orgonomy? , 

Who started orgonomy?, 

What happened to him?, 

advertising for psychiatric treatments that most people are not interested in and cannot afford, 

childrearing sermons that concern only prospective parents, 

sample information on a lot of subjects hardly anybody cares about, such as medicine, microbiology, physics, psychiatric treatment, political opinions, 

and social commentary by orgonomists on topics in the news. 

None of them offers any information of real use to most people. And they are all aimed at adults. Adults usually already have fixed ideas on most things and seldom change them. Reich knew this. He constantly advised his followers to forget about treating already sick, damaged, and warped adults and concentrate on reaching relatively unspoiled young people. But nobody in orgonomy today is following Reich's advice. So here is a suggestion:

Somebody ought to set up an orgonomic website aimed at teenagers and directed specifically at their concerns. 

It would give good acurate and comprehensive information on contraception, how to avoid sexually transmitted diseases, and feature articles by orgonomists explaining why sex is important to your mental and physical health and should be considered a fundamental human right. 

It could include information on the laws in each state on abortion, where parental consent is required, and where it is not, so a pregnant teenager could know where to travel for an abortion if her parents would not give her permission. Addresses of clinics that offer abortion services could be included. 

It would tell where it is legal for a teenager to get a prescription for birth control without parental consent. 

It would explain why the churches are so against young people having sex and how they benefit from tricking them into celibacy. It would explain the connection between adolescent celibacy and poor relationships with the other sex later in life, and why sex in the early years after puberty is important as a rehersal for later relationships. 

The close connection between sexual starvation and fascism, religion, and mental illness would be explained. 

It would give references to scientific studies showing that sex is important for health, information on herbal and other natural forms of birth control, and articles by anthropologists on how adolescent sexuality is handled by other cultures. 

It could also feature a discussion forum where adolescents could get social re-inforcement for their feelings on the subject and find support networks of others their own age, and a question and answer section where an orgonomist would answer questions. 

A project like this would cost nothing to set up and there must be several orgonomists who would be willing to take part. With at least one medical doctor involved and all information medically acurate, there would be no legal problems in presenting such a website. 

And any howls of anguish from conservatives and religious groups would only give the website more publicity. 

With the international reach of the internet, the website could be international in scope and could be presented in several languages. 

As far as I know, there is no project like this on the internet. There should be. If Reich was still alive, there would be. It is an update on what he did in Germany in the 30s. And there is still a need for it today, especially in America, which is in the grip of a Christian-Fascist movement.  

A project like this would need at least one medical doctor on board and a lawyer to insure against attempts at censorship. Doctors and lawyers would be asked to volunteer.

ORGONE  THERAPY                                                  Put It To The Test                                                  By Joel Carlinsky I recently ran into a 60-year-old man who has been in Reichian therapy for 22 years and is still working at resolving issues stemming from his childhood and upbringing. I would think that at this stage, or perhaps long before this time, he would have concluded that it is not working and he should try something else. But no, he is still convinced, despite the lack of any evidence, that he needs more therapy. This devotion strikes me as a bit fanatical. But it is far from unusual in orgonomic circles. Many people go into therapy with such high expectations that they can never quite bring themselves to admit it is not working. They remain in therapy for a lifetime, often at great expense that they can ill-afford, at at the cost of relationships that are often severely strained by their commitment to therapy. In the relatively few cases of eventual success, the beneficial results seem much more likely to depend on the individual personality of the particular therapist than on what type of therapy he happens to be providing. These therapy-junkies typically consider therapy the most important aspect of the comprehensive legacy of Reich, and refuse to get involved in, or even to take seriously, any of the scientific, socio-political, or ecological issues that derive from that huge body of work. By devoting themselves solely to their own personal salvation, they ignore the stark need of the world for a body of workers in the broad field of orgonomy and focus on introspective self-gratification to the neglect of the health of the society they live in and the planet they live on. As far as anyone else is concerned, if they had taken up Yoga or some other form of meditation, or, for that matter, any religion, the results would be the same. Reich was not very successful in developing a method of psychotherapy. I think he was correct about psychosomatic unity and the functioning of the chronic muscular tensions as a form of defense. I think he was right about how armoring forms and the role of sexual repression in the process. But when it came to inventing an effective way to remove armor in the adult, nothing worked very well. Reich knew this. He was never satisfied with any of the techniques he developed, and was constantly changing his methods. He finally gave up doing therapy and went into laboratory research full-time, years after he wanted to, because he had been forced to stick to therapy to make a living long after he knew it did not work. Throughout his career, starting right from the beginning, in 1927, he insisted that treating already sick, damaged adults was not cost-effective and he urged his collegues, and later, his students, to forget about treating adults and focus on prevention of neurosis by changing the way children were brought up. He was saying this in 1927 to other psychoanalysts, and he was still saying it in 1953 in the Murder of Christ. None of his followers took him seriously. They all had come to him, not just for job training, but more importantly, for solving their own personal hang-ups. They could not bear to think their own case was hopeless and they were doomed to go through life as they were. They HAD to believe the therapy worked. Only one orgonomist, Michael Rothenberg, took seriously what Reich kept saying and went into child psychiatry as a specialty. Rothenbergy was the only pediatric orgonomist in the world. And he was the only one of them who made it to the big time in the big world outside orgonomy. Rothenberg became the partner of Dr. Benjamin Spock and co-author with Spock of the last edition of Spock's famous book on how to bring up babies. As the designated successor to Spock, he became the most influencial pediatrician in America. All the other orgonomist continued treating adults, even though they must have known they were not having any success. They just could not tolerate the knowledge, so they blotted it out and convinced themselves they were practicing an effective method of treatment when all the evidence was that they were not. And even though they could have made just as good a living, possibly even better, if they had gone into treating children instead. I too have met several hundred ''graduates'' of Reichian therapy. None of them struck me as emotionally any healthier than the general run of the population. Many of them were in fact, obviously very neurotic. I have met Reichians who are hard-core right-wingers, and Reichians who are hard-core leftists, Reichians who are born-again Christians, orthodox Jews, Buddists, atheists, and into New-Age beliefs. I have met Reichians who keep very messy houses, wear glasses, and live with their mothers. I have met people who still, after therapy, are alcoholics, watch football games, and consider orgone energy a fantasy of one man. I have never met a person who had had Reichian therapy and could convince me he was any better off for it, although almost all of them think they are. I have personally observed the effects of orgone energy in the orgone accumulator, the orgone blanket, the cloudbuster, oranur experiment, melanor, orene, Experiment XX, and other demonstrations. I am as fully convinced of the validity of orgone biophysics as I am of the existence of the planet earth. Anyone saying cloudbusters do not work is just as silly as someone saying airplanes cannot fly. But when it comes to therapy, I think Reich never developed a method that did much good and he himself knew it. I have suggested that those who promote Reichian therapy and make a living from it should put it to the test. A new medical treatment must be shown to be effective before it can be marketed. Orgone therapy should be required to meet the same standard that any other form of medical treatment is required to meet. And the practicioners must be prepared to give it up and practice some other method of treatment if it does not pass the test. There are two ways to test orgone therapy statistically. One would be to have patients fill out a standard personality profile questionaire before starting therapy, and again at set intervals while in treatment, and at the final conclusion of treatment. Before and after changes in personality should be obvious. The other way would be to compare a sample, say about 100 individuals, who have successfully completed therapy with a similiar sized group of people who have never had any form of psychological treatment, selected at random from the general population. I consider it highly unlikely that graduates of Reichian therapy would score any healthier than the control group. And until some such formal test has been done, there is simply no evidence that Reichian therapy has any better effect that any other form of therapy or other method of inducing personality change, such as religious conversion or reading self-help books. The subjective opinions of persons who are emotionally involved in it as patients, or economically dependent on it as therapists are not evidence. For what it is worth, Eva Reich agreed with me. I spoke to her about it, and she said that was why she had gone into working only with children, not adults.  Orgonomists are selling something they cannot deliver. At least if you buy an orgone accumulator, you get something for your money. There is a song that seems appropriate here: You can't buy your way to Heaven from a preacher on T.V. / He's just another businessman is how it seems to me / He can't get you into Heaven or keep you out of Hell / He's just another salesman with merchandise to sell / He's cashing in on Jesus, that's all he's standing for / So pass the tar and feathers, Hallelujah, praise the Lord! /

The experiments showed the positive effect of the orgone accumulator on cancer tumors. This was an important part of the theory of the cancer biopathy which he eventually developed.   The biopathic concept of disease develped by Reich considers the tumor to be only a late-developing symptom of the long-term condition that ultimately leads to tumor development only after many years of chronic contraction of the entire system. Reich repeatedly stressed prevention rather than cure, disparaging any attemps at a cure, including his own methods of treatment, as impractical.   To Reich, cancer was not a matter of a tumor that "just happened" in an otherwise healthy body, but a systemic disease that after many years culminated in a tumor.   Since Reich ended his research on cancer in the 40s, though many doctors have reccomended the use of the accumulator to patients wih many different diseaes, including cancer, and some case histories have been published, only one individual, has done any published cancer research with the orgone accumulator using animal test subjects. That person is Dr. Richard Blasband, M.D.   Dr. Blasband, while a member of the American College of Orgonomy, over a period of many years, used mice in his cancer research. His procedures, however, differed so widely from those of Reich as to raise the question of if he ever really read what Reich wrote.   Reich used a specially-bred strain of mice obtained from a breeder. They were bred to develop cancer at an abnormally high rate. He then treated them with the orgone accumulator, a harmless and painless procedure that could have no other effect than improving ther health.   Blasband, by contrast, subjected healthy mice to injections of large doses of a carcinogen, enough to overwhelm the immune system of even a healthy mouse, and then treated the resultant tumors with the accumulator.   So Reich was taking a sick mouse and trying to heal it, while Blasband was taking a healthy mouse and inflicting cancer upon it.   Although the results showed a positive influence, there is nothing that this line of research could reveal about the underlying dynamics of the cancer biopathy, as elucidated by Reich. There is no possibility of a method of prevention being developed by such means. And there is no increase in our knowlege or understanding of how and why the cancer biopathy develops in a human patient.   All that could be learned is what was already known: that an accumulator can make  a tumor go away, While treatment with an accumulator is an option in treating a patient, there is no point in testing it out over and over again. The medical effects of the accumulator have been known since the 40s.   All this research can possibly tell us is what has already been known since the 40s: that the orgone accumulator makes cancer tumors shrink and vanish. Since this was already known and presented by Reich, there was nothing new being found by Dr. Blasband.   The most charitible interpetation that can be placed on the work done by Dr. Blasband is that he simply was a mechanistic-minded scientist who failed to understand what Reich was clearly explaining about the biopathic concept of the cancer disease, and did mechanistic research from the standpoint of conventional, mechanistic science, which regards the tumor as the only thing wrong in an otherwise healthy body and seeks to cure the whole problem by killing or removing the tumor.   In this conception of cancer, which is the currently prevailing one, elimination of the tumor constitutes a cure and no attempt is made to address any underlying cause of tumor formation. It is simply assumed the patient is healthy except for the existence of a tumor. It therefore makes no difference how or why the tumor developed in the first place. A genetic weakness or a massive dose of a carcinogen both cause tumors, so a treatment for one is thought to be equally effective for the other.   There is an excuse for mainstream scientists to think this way; they are ignorant of the findings of Reich, which, after all, are not very well known. But for Dr. Blasband, there is no such excuse. He is very familiar with what Reich had to say on the subject. Nor can he claim to disbelieve what Reich claims. He has devoted his entire professional career to following in the footsteps of Reich.   Which raises an ugly question: If he did experiments on a very large number of mice, over many years, with no possibility of learning anything of scientific or medical value according to the very theories he himself considers valid, could the pain and suffering inflicted on those mice have been his real motivation?   In this connection, it is possibly of some significance that Dr. Blasband is not only a labratory researcher. That, in fact, is only a sideline for him. His main career is as a psychotherapist. He practices Reihian therapy, a form of therapy which can sometimes be extremely disturbing and both mentally and physically painful for the patient.   Which brings to mind the question: would you want somebody who tortures mice to do such therapy on you? And all of his research was published in the Journal Of Orgonomy, a journal of the American College Of Orgonomy, an organization of psychiatrists, none of whom apprently ever saw anything wrong with his line of research. What does that say about their own competence and personalities?    Dr. Blasband no longer does research on mice. That might make his long history of such work seem moot. But his written reports remain widely available and are in the minds of  a newer generation of Reichians, who continue to refer to his reports as if they actually contributed some worthwhile knowlege to the science of orgonomy. It is incumbent upon those who know better to bring the scientific worthlessness and questionable motivations of his bogus research to their attention.

Conspiracy Theory

The McCarthy-era paranoid fantasy of communists infiltrating American government agencies. In case, he compounded it by thinking he personally was the target of Soviet espionage and that the FDA case against was instigated by communist agents working on direct orders from Moscow. He also thought journalists who disbelieved his work were communist-inspired and directed from Moscow too. 

This ignored the obvious: the FDA has brought similar cases against practioners of other types of alternative medicine, the theory of a previously unknown life energy is so distant from the theories in modern medicine that anyone with medical training will automatically jump to the conclusion is cannot possibly be true, and journalists today, long after there is no more Soviet Union, still publish articles on the theme that Reich, no matter how badly mistreated by the legal system, was wrong about the existence of a life energy. 

Reich had no idea how far he had come from where the medical establishment was. He did not realize how strange and unbelievable his work sounded to them. He could not see how wildly improbable it seemed to the scientific communty, to scientifically-educated journalists, and to the agencies charged with protecting the public from fraudulent medical claims. Instead, he fell for the McCarthyist line that there were Soviet agents in all government agencies, even those, like the FDA, whose province was only to control the drug industry to protect the public from medical fraud, an area that would not be of much concern to an enemy nation as would the diplomatic corps or military forces. 

Try this experiment: talk to a medical doctor without mentioning Reich's name or using any of his specific terminology, but describe the orgone accumulator and what it is supposed to do. Then ask him if he thinks it would be an effective treatment for a life-threatening condition. Then try it with a physics teachjer from any university, asking if he thinks it would collect a form of energy unknown to science and violate the second law of thermodynamics. Well, you already can guess what answers you would get. So why expect the doctors and scientists of the 1950s to react any differently?  And why then is there a need for enemy agents to bring a cxase against a person who was selling such a device to cancer victims? 

Reich thought the motive of the Soviets was to gain a monopoly of his inovative treatment, the accumulator, for their own use while depriving the Americans of it. In the Cold War era not much information was available to the American public on what was going on in the Soviet Union. Today we know for an absolute certainty that there is no medical use of the orgone accumulator in any hospital in Russia. If the Soviet government ever had thought the accumulator was a worthwhile treatment, they apparently never got around to using it.  

Reich compounded his problems several times over by also pùblishing books dealing with sex. If he had not written on that highly-charged and emotional issue and had stuck to less explosive topics in his earlier work, he might have avoided a lot of hostility. In the 50s there was still a lot of puritanism in a degree that seems impossible today, and his getting a reputation for advocating sexual freedom did nothing to help him avoid notoriety. 

And since cancer scares people more than most diseases, he also made himself a target by using cancer as a demonstratiuon model for his theory of systematic breakdown. If he had been writing about a treatment for arthritis, for example, nobody would have bothered to prosecute him. But since it was a cancer treatment, that triggered a reaction from frightened people. 

So instead of jumping on the right-wing bandwagon and claiming the magazine articles critical of his work were written by Soviet agents under orders to discredit him, and that an American government agency responsible for protecting the public from false medical claims was controlled by Soviet agents trying to deprive the American public of his discoveries so the Soviet Union could have a monopoly of their use in treating it's citrizens, he would have done better to have realized that he had gone too far ahead of the times and the reaction he was getting was a normal response to the strangeness of his claims.
